About the Rusty Awards
The Committee’s largest annual event, held every October at the Bell County Expo Center. This county-wide event presents awards recognizing the positive contributions and impact of individuals with disabilities across Bell County.
Named after Rusty Morales, whose story inspired the founding of the committee in 1978, the Rusty Awards celebrate courage, advocacy, and community impact.
Award Categories
Bell County Judge's Meritorious Service Award
Recognizes an individual with a disability who has made a meaningful and positive impact within the community.
Laura Pat Taylor Advocate Award
Named after a dedicated Bell County advocate who contributed countless hours of service despite living with polio and limb loss.
Jennifer Phillips Award for Courage
Honors courage and resilience. Jennifer, a high school cheerleader with cystic fibrosis, was crowned Homecoming Queen and inspired many.
Jim & Daurice Bowmer Family of the Year Award
Recognizes a family making a difference, including contributions such as co-founding Peaceable Kingdom retreat center.
Harry Wilson Athlete of the Year Award
Named after a Belton High School football player who was paralyzed during a game but continued to inspire others.
Judge John Garth Person of the Year Award
Honors a community leader who has made a lasting impact in disability advocacy.
